Attorney general candidate gets Senate vote … Civil suit to be filed after Missouri shooting … France-Terrorism

WASHINGTON (AP) — The long wait is over for the New York prosecutor who’s been waiting to be confirmed as President Barack Obama’s new attorney general. Loretta Lynch is expected to be approved when the Senate votes later today. She was selected by Obama five months ago but her nomination got caught up in a Senate fight over an unrelated bill on human trafficking.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Lawyers for the parents of the black 18-year-old who was fatally shot by a white police officer in a St. Louis suburb say they plan to file a civil suit later today against the city of Ferguson. The lawsuit from the family of Michael Brown had been expected. Attorneys for Brown’s mother and his father said in early March that a wrongful death suit would be filed.

PARIS (AP) — France’s prime minister says the threat of terrorism “has never been so significant.” But Manuel Valls also says authorities are up to the challenge. Valls tells France Inter radio that five attacks have been thwarted since an assault by Islamic extremists in January left 20 people dead. He says one attack was averted Sunday, when a would-be gunman apparently shot himself in the leg and called for an ambulance, raising police suspicion.

BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union leaders are trying to come to grips with a growing crisis involving migrants fleeing from conflict and violence from places like Syria, Eritrea and Somalia. Officials gathering for a summit in Brussels today are facing calls to take emergency action to save lives in the Mediterranean, where hundreds of migrants are missing and feared drowned in recent days.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Attorneys representing a transgender prison inmate are asking a federal judge to stick with his order that California officials must immediately provide the inmate with sex reassignment surgery. They filed arguments last night opposing a delay while the state corrections department appeals the decision issued by a federal judge in San Francisco earlier this month.
