Water main break closes lanes of Richmond Highway

WASHINGTON — A water main break is hampering  traffic on U.S. 1/Richmond Highway in both directions between Frye Road and Highland Lane in the Woodlawn area of Fairfax County, not far from Fort Belvoir. One lane of traffic is getting by in both directions on Richmond Highway. Earlier, the entire road was closed for three hours at the beginning of morning rush hour. Fairfax Water spokeswoman Jeanne Bennett-Bailey says a 14-inch water main broke at Route 1 and Wyngate Court, around 4 a.m. Crews were able to turn off water flowing through the broken pipe, leaving eight townhouses without water. Water service for the eight homes was restored by 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Bennett-Bailey says it is unclear when the repairs will be completed, and the cause of the break has not been determined.
