WASHINGTON – D.C. police say a man died while in their custody today.

ABC 7 says earlier this afternoon, officers were called to the Department of Mental Health. When they arrived, police say, a combative man at the scene assaulted the officers.

Police subdued and handcuffed the man, who then lost consciousness.

He was taken to an area hospital, where he died. Police have not released the man’s identity, but are promising more information tonight.
