How the Dow Jones industrial average did Thursday

The U.S. stock market edged further into record territory on Thursday as traders were encouraged by the latest corporate earnings.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 69.94 points, or 0.4 percent, to 17,554.47.

The S&P 500 index gained 7.64 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 2,031.21

The Nasdaq composite gained 17.75 points, also 0.4 percent, to 4,638.47.

For the week:

The Dow is up 163.95 points, or 0.9 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 13.16 points, or 0.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 7.73 points, or 0.2 percent

For the year:

The Dow is up 977.81 points, or 5.9 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 182.85 points, or 9.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 461.88 points, or 11.1 percent.
