Police ID man fatally shot by Bedford deputies

BEDFORD, Va. (AP) — Police have released the name of a man fatally shot by Bedford County sheriff’s deputies.

Virginia State Police identified the man as 37-year-old Richard Thomas Bergeron of Bedford.

The shooting occurred Oct. 27 at a Bergeron’s home.

Media outlets report that deputies went to the residence after a woman called 911 and screamed for police. The deputies found an injured woman and a man wielding an ax. The man was shot by deputies.

The incident remains under investigation. Deputies involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave.
