Timbers’ Valeri has knee surgery

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri has had surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

It is expected that Valeri will miss at least five months after Monday’s operation, so it is unlikely he’ll be back in time for the start of the 2015 season.

Valeri was injured in the Portland’s season finale, a 2-0 victory over Dallas on Oct. 25.

The 28-year-old Argentine set team records with 11 goals and 14 assists in 33 games this season, his second with the Timbers. He was selected for the MLS All-Star team.
