Protest planned before Minnesota Vikings game

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Opponents of the Washington Redskins’ team name are hoping for a large turnout for a protest at an upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Organizers say they’re expecting as many as 5,000 American Indians from across the country to take part in the demonstration Sunday outside of TCF Bank Stadium. The venue also features Tribal Nations Plaza, a monument that honors each of the state’s 11 Indian tribes.

Opponents of the name believe it’s a racial slur that mocks Native American culture and they want the team to change it.

A Redskins spokesman says the team is coming to Minnesota to win a football game and isn’t concerned with politics.

Minnesota Public Radio News (http://bit.ly/1G27XK4 ) reports Minnesota is home to more than 100,000 people of Native American ancestry.
