Sales deplete supply of Montgomery County’s first medical marijuana store

WASHINGTON — Medical marijuana patients in Maryland snapped up all the available supply in the first two days of operation at Montgomery County’s first dispensary — Potomac Holistics in Rockville.

Without adequate supply, the facility won’t open as planned on Sunday and may not open as scheduled on Monday.

“The demand has remained very high,” said Potomac Holistics owner, Bill Askinazi. “Our products have been sold out with minor exception for certain, particular strains.”

The facility, and seven others across the state, were provided the same amount of supplies from Maryland’s 15 licensed growers. Askinazi said Potomac Holistics sold all five pounds of medical marijuana plus numerous cases of tablets and elixirs.

“We could have probably sold, without exaggeration, triple the 5 pounds, had we had it,” Askinazi said.

To avoid inconveniencing patients, Askinazi said the facility would remain closed on Sunday.

“People are coming from all parts of the state so we don’t want them to waste their time here,” Askinazi said. “So we’re going to post it on our website and if we do get product, we’ll open. If we don’t get product, we’ll wait until we do get product and then open.”

More supply is expected, perhaps by midweek, keeping patients waiting who were left out of Friday and Saturday’s sales.

Askinazi said he also expects an expanded product line in the weeks ahead to include cannabis oils and vapes.

“There’s folks here with Multiple Sclerosis, with diabetes, neuropathies, cancer and they swear by cannabis,” Askinazi said. “They’ve been waiting for much more than another week, some have been waiting five years or longer.”
