Rockville apartment fire displaces 9 families

WASHINGTON — Nine families are displaced following a fire at a five-story apartment building in Rockville, Maryland, Thursday evening.

Montgomery County Fire were called to the Galvan at Twinbrook apartments on the 1800 block of Chapman Avenue for a water flow alarm at around 5:30 p.m.

According to Montgomery County Fire spokesman Pete Piringer, sprinkler activation had controlled a fire that started on the fourth floor balcony. Piringer said the fire, which started within the ductwork of the walls and floors, was likely caused by smoking materials.

The apartment building was evacuated and there were no reported injuries.

Piringer said there was $250,000 worth of damages.
