Will Ferrell takes the field at Spring Training

WASHINGTON — Will Ferrell has something of a history with sports. He’s played athletes on the big screen in everything from semipro basketball to NASCAR racing to figure skating. But on Thursday, he took on a much more genuine athletic endeavor.

As part of a stunt for an upcoming HBO/Funny or Die special, Farrell partnered with Major League Baseball to play all 10 positions on 10 teams in five Spring Training games, all in the same day.

The exercise wasn’t entirely self-serving. The idea was spawned as an homage to former big leaguer Bert Campaneris, who once played all nine field positions in one game. The pitching of Steve Dalkowski made it to the big screen, but he never made it to the major leagues. Dalkowski, who pitched for the Baltimore Orioles’ minor leagues teams from 1957-1965, died April 19 at the age of 80. The Nuke LaLoosh character in the movie classic "Bull Durham" was loosely based on Dalkowski’s career.
