Chesterfield boy injured in day care fire dies

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (AP) — A 1-year-old Chesterfield boy has died from injuries suffered in a fire at an in-home day care.

Chesterfield County Fire and EMS spokesman Lt. Jason Elmore identified the boy as 1-year-old Joseph Allen.

Elmore said Wednesday in a news release that firefighters rescued the boy from the fire on Tuesday. He later died at VCU Medical Center.

Elmore says the cause of the fire remains under investigation but it appears to be accidental. County fire marshals have determined that the fire started in an attached garage.

Media outlets report that the fire occurred at a day care operated in a home, and eight children were in the home at the time.

In September, two children died from injuries suffered in a fire at an in-home day care in Lynchburg.
