Kauai braces as tropical storm warning declared

HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii’s westernmost islands braced for Hurricane Ana’s winds and rains Saturday as a tropical storm warning was declared for Kauai County.

The announcement came as Hurricane Ana slowed and stayed on its northwest path running parallel to Hawaii’s islands.

The National Weather Service says that the center of Ana could pass 115 miles southwest of Kauai, and the worst conditions will be felt around midnight.

Hurricane Ana generated strong winds and heavy rains that prompted flash-flood warnings and lured surfers with high waves earlier in the day.

A tropical storm watch remained in effect on Oahu but was lifted for Maui, Lanai and the Big Island.

So far, there have been no reports of serious damage or flooding in Hawaii as a result of the storm.
