Montgomery County schools request waiver for 3 snow days

WASHINGTON — In Montgomery County, where snow days knocked out seven days of instruction, the Board of Education has authorized interim Superintendent Larry Bowers to ask state officials for a waiver of up to three days.

Dana Tofig, spokesman for Montgomery County Public Schools, explains that waivers “are not a given,” and that right now the plan to make up snow days is to extend the school year until June 17.

Last year, MCPS lost 10 days of instruction to snow days and got a waiver for four of those days. Four snow days had been built into the school calendar, so that left two days to make up. The schools used Easter Monday as one makeup day and extended the school year by one day.
