Cal Poly holds off Southern Utah, 42-39

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) — Chris Brown and Kori Garcia each ran for fourth quarter touchdowns as Cal Poly survived a 42-39 battle with Southern Utah Saturday night.

Brown threw for two touchdowns and Brandon Howe punched in from the 1 as the Mustangs (2-3, 1-1 Big Sky) bolted to a 21-0 lead after one quarter.

Ammon Olsen answered, throwing a 29-yard strike to Justin Brown and dashing over from the 3 while Trevor McGirr kicked a 34-yard field goal in the second quarter to pull Southern Utah within 21-17 at intermission.

The Thunderbirds (1-5, 1-1) took the lead twice in the third quarter. Olsen threw 5 yards to Chandler Allphin for a 24-21 lead, then fired a 20-yard strike to Mitch Jessop for a 31-28 advantage.

Olsen rallied the Thunderbirds for a final drive, squeezing in from the 1 and tossing a two-point conversion pass to Chris Robinson to get within a field goal.
