Ex-Twins manager Tom Kelly suffers stroke

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins say former manager Tom Kelly is recovering after suffering what the team calls a minor stroke last week.

Twins general manager Terry Ryan says he spoke to Kelly on Monday. Kelly told Ryan that he was briefly hospitalized after the stroke, but doctors have told him that he should make a full recovery.

Kelly has done some broadcast work during the team’s games in recent seasons and has long been a special instructor in the minor leagues for the organization.

He managed the Twins from 1986 to 2001 and led the team to World Series championships in 1987 and 1991.

Ryan says he will consult with Kelly during the hiring process for a new manager after Ron Gardenhire was fired on Monday.
