‘Yoga tax’ kicks in this week

WASHINGTON — You might want to get a few yoga classes in early this week — it’s going to cost more starting Wednesday.

That’s when the so-called “yoga tax” — a 5.75 percent tax on health clubs and fitness centers — goes into effect. But a lot more than exercise is affected by the tax, including the delivery of bottled water, car washing, and even carpet and upholstery cleaning services.

D.C. Council chairman Phil Mendelson says the new sales taxes were recommended by a blue-ribbon tax commission as part of a package that includes a cut in the individual income tax.
