Western Md. man charged with illegal bear kill

FLINTSTONE, Md. (AP) — Maryland Natural Resources Police say a Flintstone man baited and killed a black bear out of season.

The Cumberland Times-News (http://bit.ly/1rhXkMG ) reported Monday that 48-year-old Steven Daniel McKee also is charged with failing to report the killing of an antlerless deer.

McKee has no listed home phone number and could not be reached for comment.

Police say they got a tip that someone had killed a bear with a crossbow near a bait pile in eastern Allegany County. Baiting for game is banned in that part of the county to curb the spread of chronic wasting disease among deer.

Officers say they found a dead female bear, an untagged dead doe and a pile of corn near McKee’s home on Sept. 13.

The black bear season begins Oct. 20.
