‘South Park’ tackles Redskins’ name controversy (Video)

WASHINGTON — The Washington Redskins are taking flak for the team’s name from a whole new source: a cartoon.

The popular Comedy Central show, “South Park” took aim at the Redskins’ name in an ad that aired during Sunday’s Redskins-Eagles game.

The promo for the show’s 18th season features a cartoon version of Dan Snyder arguing for the rights to the Redskins’ name and logo. The ad makes light of a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office decision earlier this year that stripped the team of its trademark protection.

In the commercial, Eric Cartman runs a business named after the Washington Redskins, but Snyder says the heisting of the name is “offensive” and “derogatory.”

The ad appears to only have aired in the D.C. area, according to sports blog, SB Nation.

The advertisement drew mixed reactions from fans.

The 18th season of South Park kicks off Wednesday, Sept. 24.

The Redskins went on to lose to the Eagles, 37-34.
