Pilot crashes on fog-covered mountain in SW Va

FANCY GAP, Va. (AP) — Police say a pilot suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries when his plane crashed on a foggy Interstate 77 median in Carroll County.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the plane was traveling south along the interstate Wednesday afternoon when it clipped treetops and crashed into a mountain that makes up the median at Fancy Gap. She says the 1939 J3 single-engine aircraft never touched the highway.

Geller says the area was experiencing dense fog. Visibility on the ground was about 500 feet. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified, and the investigation is continuing.

Geller says the 67-year-old pilot, whose name was not released, was the only person on the plane. He was transported to a North Carolina hospital.
