The Hunt: ISIS destroys the Great Mosque of al-Nuri

WASHINGTON — The 800 year old Great Mosque of al Nuri in Mosul, Iraq was destroyed Wednesday night. This was the mosque where ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi famously announced the formation of its so-called “caliphate” in 2014. ISIS blamed the U.S. military for destroying the mosque.

But in this week’s edition of The Hunt with WTOP national security correspondent J.J. Green, Col. John Thomas, spokesman for U.S. Central Command, said that’s not the case.

WASHINGTON — If the momentum of a U.S.-led coalition is any indicator, the black flag of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) may be completely eradicated from Syria and Iraq in a matter of months. But the head of the National Counterterrorism Center warns that the black cloud of ISIS terrorism will not dissipate the day after the caliphate falls.
