Grand jury to probe Ga. raid that injured baby

ATLANTA (AP) — A northeast Georgia prosecutor says a grand jury will investigate a police raid that severely injured a 1 1/2-year-old boy when a flash grenade detonated in the child’s playpen.

District Attorney Brian Rickman said Tuesday that he will present results of an investigation into the botched raid to a grand jury on Sept. 29.

Rickman tells WSB-TV (http://bit.ly/Ytwcjj) that the grand jury is expected to determine whether the raid in Habersham County was handled appropriately, and it could return criminal charges if warranted. No charges have been filed so far.

Bounkham Phonesavanh (BOON’-kahm fohn-SAH’-vahn) was asleep in a playpen in late May when authorities looking for a suspected drug dealer threw a flash grenade into the house.

Family members say the boy has undergone several extensive surgeries since the raid.
