State, national registers add Lynchburg district

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — The area surrounding the Anne Spencer House & Garden Museum in Lynchburg has been added to the state and national historic registers.

Assistant city planner Kevin Henry tells The News & Advance (http://bit.ly/1qC5dwc ) that the state and national listings will enable property owners to seek tax credits to rehabilitate or make significant repairs to structures.

Henry says the recognition also will increase the area’s historical scale.

The Anne Spencer House & Garden Museum has been on the state and national registers for 37 years. Spencer was a poet, civil rights activist, teacher and librarian. She died in 1975.
