KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — Sudan’s state-run news agency says a prominent opposition figure has been released from detention that lasted about a month.

SUNA reported that the deputy head of the National Umma Party, Mariam al-Mahdi, was released Tuesday. She was kept in solitary confinement for 28 days at the Omdurman Women’s Prison after security forces arrested her on the tarmac of Khartoum International Airport on Aug. 11.

She was returning from unity talks in Paris with rebels opposed to Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir.

Mahdi’s father, Sadiq, was jailed earlier this year after accusing a government-linked paramilitary force of human rights violations in Darfur following the 2003 outbreak of civil war there between armed rebels the government in Khartoum.
