BANGKOK (AP) — Thai police on Monday questioned a doctor at the heart of the surrogacy scandal involving a Japanese businessman who has reportedly fathered 16 surrogate babies.

Pisit Tantiwattanakul’s whereabouts had been unknown since he closed his fertility clinic and emptied it of all patient files shortly after the scandal broke in early August.

Police, however, summoned Pisit, and he presented himself to investigators for the first time late Monday at a police station in Bangkok.

Pisit was the owner of a fertility clinic allegedly involved in performing commercial surrogacy for Mitsutoki Shigeta, a 24-year-old Japanese man who is not currently in Thailand.

Police Col. Decha Promsuwan said the police will likely press two charges against Pisit, including violation of the regulations of the Medical Council of Thailand, which ban commercial surrogacy.
