FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — Fairfax County leaders are debating how to pay for changes in the school year calendar with the elimination of half-day Mondays for elementary students.

Fairfax schools made the change for this school year to provide more instructional time and to build in a cushion in case of inclement weather. But the additional instructional time is estimated to cost $7.6 million. The school system covered the cost this year by using leftover funds from last year.

The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1ps67WP ) reports school officials on Tuesday asked the county Board of Supervisors to fund full-day instruction on Mondays going forward. Superintendent Karen Garza says it’s a good investment in children that could help improve academic achievement.

But some county supervisors object to the change being made before funding was in place.
