OLDTOWN, Md. (AP) — The owner of a private toll bridge over the Potomac River says she’s rebuilding the structure between western Maryland and West Virginia after it was damaged by a June flood.
Lori Roberts told the Cumberland Times-News (http://bit.ly/1uBbBGs ) Thursday that work has begun on the Oldtown Toll Bridge linking Oldtown to Green Spring, West Virginia. She says she’s not sure when it will reopen.
Allegany County Emergency Services Director Dick DeVore says high water on June 12 washed away part of the bridge decking and twisted the steel support beams.
The one-lane bridge is the only river crossing for about 15 miles in either direction.
The Maryland Public Service Commission approved rate increases last year that tripled the passenger-car toll from 50 cents to $1.50, partly to pay for needed repairs.
