WASHINGTON — School starts in less than two weeks in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties and D.C., and when school bells begin ringing Aug. 25, some children will need proof they’ve complied with new school immunization requirements.

Maryland now requires kindergarten students to have two doses of Varicella vaccine. Students entering seventh grade now are required to have a single dose each of Tdap and Meningococcal (MCV4) vaccines.

Free immunizations are available for children without health insurance — in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties, for example.

School-required vaccines are free for everyone in some jurisdictions however — in Fairfax and Prince William counties, for example.

In Virginia, schools not granted a waiver are required to begin classes after Labor Day.
