NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A Panamanian shipping company has sued the U.S. government to pay for repairs that one if its tankers needed after it collided with a Navy destroyer in the Middle East.

The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/1sYnxiI ) Volts Shipping Navigation S.A. filed a lawsuit in federal court in Norfolk on Monday seeking more than $1.7 million.

The company claims the USS Porter violated nearly a dozen international shipping regulations leading up to the 2012 collision.

The Navy removed the Porter’s commanding officer from command three weeks after the collision. An internal investigation determined the officer showed poor judgment when he ordered the ship to cut across the path of the oncoming tanker the night it approached the Strait of Hormuz.

The Navy spent more than $50 million on repairs to the Porter.
