Sister of toddler found dead at resort to survive

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police say a 13-year-old girl will survive after she was found seriously injured in the same room of a coastal Oregon resort where her 2-year-old sister was found dead.

No suspects have been named, but investigators are looking for the mother of the children — 40-year-old Jessica Smith of Goldendale, Washington.

At a news conference Saturday, Cannon Beach Chief Jason Schermerhorn said the father of the girls has cooperated with detectives and been ruled out as a suspect.

Multiple media reports citing court records say the couple had recently separated.

The girl was found cut Friday morning. The chief says her toddler sister was not cut, and he’s awaiting autopsy results.

The teen is recovering after surgery at a children’s hospital in Portland, and her condition is stable.
