Henderson Alvarez start cut short by bruised shin

MIAMI (AP) — Marlins All-Star pitcher Henderson Alvarez left Saturday’s game against San Francisco in the third inning after being struck on the left leg by a grounder off the bat of Joe Panik.

Alvarez threw to first for the out, then limped off the field with the help of catcher Jarrod Saltamacchia and a trainer.

Miami said Alvarez sustained a bruised shin and is day to day. With the Marlins trailing 2-1, he was replaced by Sam Dyson.

Alvarez entered 6-4 with a 2.63 ERA with a major league-high three shutouts.
