A way to put old shipping boxes to good use — for free

WASHINGTON — You might have a lot of empty boxes from online retailers lying around your home this holiday season, and now there’s a free way to put them to good use.

The Give Back Box program allows people to fill their shipping boxes with items they want to donate and ship them to the nearest Goodwill – free.

When you get something from one of the participating sellers, simply fill it up again with clothes, accessories and/or household goods (electronics aren’t allowed), then go to GiveBackBox.com, click on the retailer your box is from, enter your ZIP code and email address, and you’ll get a label for free shipping to your nearest Goodwill. Stick it to the box and ship it off.

Participating sellers include Amazon, Loft, REI, Overstock.com and more.
