Braves RHP Simmons has elbow surgery, likely to miss season

ATLANTA (AP) — Braves right-hander Shae Simmons has undergone Tommy John surgery and is expected to miss the upcoming season.

The team said the surgery was done Thursday by Dr. James Andrews.

The 24-year-old Simmons made his major league debut last season, going 1-2 with one save and a 2.91 ERA in 26 games for Atlanta. He struck out 23 in 21 2-3 innings.

The pitching of Steve Dalkowski made it to the big screen, but he never made it to the major leagues. Dalkowski, who pitched for the Baltimore Orioles’ minor leagues teams from 1957-1965, died April 19 at the age of 80. The Nuke LaLoosh character in the movie classic "Bull Durham" was loosely based on Dalkowski’s career.
