Nordstrom’s online store sells out of $85 rocks

WASHINGTON — Remember when naughty children were given lumps of coal in their Christmas stocking? This season, is seems as if a lot of people, both naughty and nice, may be getting rocks — Nordstrom’s $85 leather-wrapped stone, to be exact. Nordstom’s online store sold out of these “Los Angeles-area stones wrapped in rich, vegetable-tanned American leather” after the rocks went viral on social media. A medium-sized stone cost $85, while a slightly smaller rock sold for $65. The rocks were apparently for multipurpose use, based on the item’s description online: “A paperweight? A conversation piece? A work of art? It’s up to you.” Each rock comes nestled in a leather pouch that is “cut, shaped, sewn and finished by hand … using vintage leatherworking tools and traditional saddle-stitching techniques.” Naturally, social media users had a field day with the item. #NordstromRock started trending on Twitter, and the rock landed a Twitter account with more than 180 followers. The rock began attracting international attention.

The item drummed up some excitement in at least one office.

And inspired some rocky puns.

Nordstrom has not yet released information on whether the rock will be restocked.
