OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A man is in custody on suspicion of arson after authorities say he set fire to cardboard inside a baggage claim area at a San Francisco Bay Area airport.

The fire around 3:30 a.m. Friday at Oakland International Airport charred a wall but otherwise caused no damage. Airport spokesman Brian Kidd says there were no passengers in the area at the time, and airport services were not affected.

The fire was put out before fire crews showed up.

Kidd says the man, who was in his 60s, was not a passenger. It was unclear what led him to start the fire.

Alameda County Sheriff’s officials described him as a transient and told the Contra Costa Times (http://bit.ly/1m15Icz) he tried to leave on a bus before he was detained.
