WASHINGTON (AP) — A sinkhole will make the commute into downtown Washington more difficult than usual.

The District Department of Transportation has closed two lanes of northbound 14th Street Northwest, between Constitution Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue. The department says the closure will last through Thursday morning’s rush hour, and officials are urging drivers to use alternate routes.

The two-by-four-foot sinkhole opened on Tuesday. A spokesman for DC Water says the hole was caused by an opening in a sewer, and crews are working to repair the damaged pipe.

The street is one of the most heavily traveled commuter routes into the District of Columbia from Virginia.
