FALLS CHURCH, Va. — Metro is pushing back the next batch of round-the-clock track work, Metro Chief Operations Officer Joe Leader announced on Tuesday.

Leader said track-work surges scheduled for January will be suspended due in part to the likelihood of winter weather.

Leader told reporters that track work would continue in the tunnels during evenings and weekends in January. And the next round of track work would likely be announced that month and begin in February.

A Red Line work zone that was scheduled to end Tuesday will wrap up as planned, he said.

Great work had been done on the tracks and some progress had been made on structural issues near the Rhode Island Avenue Station, Leader said.

However, a Metro source told WTOP that trains will likely have to share a single track through the area more frequently – including possibly at night and on weekends – in order to allow the outside contractors to continue the structural repairs.
