TOWSON, Md. (AP) — A former high school football coach from Frederick County has struck a deal to avoid trial on a charge that he punched a player in the chest.

Defense attorney Jason Silverstein said Thursday that the second-degree assault charge against 42-year-old David Mencarini was placed on the inactive docket Thursday in Baltimore County District Court.

Silverstein says the charge will be dismissed if Mencarini meets certain conditions set by the school district that he believes include completing an anger management class.

Mencarini resigned as Urbana High School’s coach in September after a player’s father filed a police report about a sideline altercation during a game at Milford Mill High School.

Frederick County Public Schools spokesman Michael Doerrer says Mencarini remains on paid administrative leave from his physical education teaching job.
