WASHINGTON – The World War II Memorial, on the National Mall, was vandalized with spray paint on Monday.

The National Park Service says in a statement that someone spray-painted the North Dakota column of the memorial some time before 10 a.m. on Monday. Park service spokesman Mike Litterst said in the statement that preservation experts have cleaned much of the paint off already, and will continue to use “a light paint stripper” until the paint is gone.
