WASHINGTON — A program meant to cut down on drunk driving will take effect in the D.C. metro area on July 4.

“Thirty-one percent of all traffic deaths in this country are caused by drunk drivers. That figure jumps up to 44 percent specifically on Independence day,” says Kurt Erickson, president of the Washington Regional Alcohol Program.

The non-profit group offers a service called SoberRide, which covers cab fare for those who have been drinking.

Starting at 10 p.m. July 4, anyone who is at least 21 can call 1-800-200-TAXI and ask for a cab.

Up to $30 of cab fare will be covered, which typically means a completely free ride.

The service runs through 4 a.m. July 5.

Cab rides are offered in D.C., as well as Montgomery, Prince George’s, Arlington, Fairfax, eastern Loudoun and Prince William counties.
