Virginia Tech wrestler drowns in former quarry

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — A Virginia Tech wrestler has drowned while swimming in a former quarry in Blacksburg.

A news release posted on the Virginia Tech athletics website says 21-year-old Darren Hankins died in a drowning accident Wednesday night.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says in a news release that a man drowned while swimming with several other people in a former quarry on private property.

The sheriff’s office says bystanders tried to help the man when he began having difficulty staying afloat. But they couldn’t keep him above water. Searchers recovered the body around 7:30 p.m.

Virginia Tech says Hankins sat out the 2013-2014 season due to injury after competing on the varsity squad for two seasons. He was a junior philosophy major from Chesapeake.
