NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The USS Mesa Verde is heading back to Norfolk after delivering aid in Haiti in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.

The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/2e3kGoF ) that hundreds of Marines and several helicopters aboard the Mesa Verde were transferred to another ship and will stay in the area to continue providing assistance.

The Mesa Verde arrived in Haiti on Sunday. It was relieved Friday by the USS Iwo Jima, a much larger amphibious assault ship based out of Mayport, Florida.

Officials say that as of Friday, the military had delivered 426,000 pounds of food, medical supplies and other aid to the country. Flooding triggered by the hurricane has killed at least 43 people in the United States and more than 500 people in Haiti.
