ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) – Old Town Alexandria is launching an effort to capture and contain sewage that overflows into the Potomac River.

The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/2d7UndR ) reports that the plan will capture overflows in three locations, but it will not fix an area that accounts for nearly half of the overflow into the river.

City officials say that the area, which dumps sewage into the Oronoco Bay, was not part of a federal order that required the city to reduce pollution from sewage outflows. They noted that the site will see major redevelopment in coming years that may address the problem.

State Sen. Scott Surovell has criticized city officials, accusing them of prioritizing infrastructure projects over raw sewage.

The newspaper reports that the city’s sewers spew 11.3 million gallons of sewage a year.
