BALTIMORE (AP) — Two incumbent Maryland state senators have lost in Republican primary races.

Sen. David Brinkley, the Senate minority leader, lost his primary race to Del. Michael Hough in a western Maryland district that includes much of Frederick County and some of Carroll County.

Hough is finishing his first term in the House of Delegates. Hough campaigned as the more conservative candidate.

On the Eastern Shore, Del. Adelaide Eckardt defeated Sen. Richard Colburn in a district that includes Talbot County, as well as parts of Dorchester, Caroline and Wicomico counties.

Colburn has held the seat since 1995. Eckardt has served in the House for the same period.
