RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Three local sheriffs’ offices in Virginia are set to receive about $160,000 in federal funding in return for accepting firearms from people subject to permanent protective orders.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s announced the grants Monday, saying they would go to sheriffs’ offices in Dinwiddie County, Franklin County and Wise County.

McAuliffe, a Democrat, and Republican state lawmakers agreed to compromise gun legislation earlier this year that prohibits people from carrying a firearm if they are subject to a permanent protective order for a domestic violence offense.
