Virginia now welcoming a broader array of ‘lovers’

WASHINGTON — Virginia says it is for lovers and now, it is saying it is welcome to all lovers.

The Virginia Tourism Corporation has rolled out a new campaign geared toward the LGBT community.

The tourism site now has a webpage that features businesses and locations that have listed themselves as LGBT-friendly.

“Virginia is proud to be an open and welcoming destination for every visitor attracted by our scenic mountains and beaches, as well as our world-renowned restaurants, wineries and breweries,” said Gov. Terry McAuliffe in a statement. “I am pleased the Virginia Tourism Corporation has created this landing page to connect travelers with inclusive, LGBT-friendly establishments across the Commonwealth. Virginia is truly for lovers, and we hope you have an unforgettable experience visiting the greatest state in the greatest nation on Earth!”

Tourism is big business for the commonwealth. Officials say the industry supports over 223,000 jobs and contributed $1.6 billion in state and local tax revenue.

LGBT travelers make up nearly 10 percent of the U.S. market.

According to the Virginia Tourism Corporation, roughly five percent of travelers to Virginia identify themselves as LGBT and they tend to spend more and stay longer than other tourists.
