Metro train derails in Va. rail yard, damages tracks

WASHINGTON — A derailment in a rail yard Thursday night caused moderate damage to the tracks and two railcars, a Metro spokesman said.

Metro is still looking into why two 6000 Series cars in the six-car train derailed in the Alexandria Rail Yard around 9:40 p.m.

Metro spokesman Richard Jordan said in an email that both cars remained upright and no one was hurt.

It did not directly impact passenger service.

It has been a troubling season for Metro as it works on its track repairs. On the same night as the derailment, debris fell at the Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station — the second time in two days. It caused the station’s closure.

WASHINGTON — Oversight and contracting failures at Metro risked an immediate loss of millions in federal funding, a new audit report from Metro’s Office of Inspector General found. The audit of Metro’s Buy America contract award and oversight process found $68 million in bus, paratransit or rail car vehicle and parts purchases did not meet federal contracting requirements, and $517 million of the $1.4 billion in contracts reviewed did not follow the Federal Transit Administration’s nonbinding suggested best practices.
