WASHINGTON (AP) — District of Columbia elections officials are making nominating petitions available for candidates for attorney general.

It’s still not clear when the city’s first election for the position will be held. But candidates can now obtain the materials they need to get their name on the ballot. Paul Zukerberg, the only announced candidate for the office, planned to pick up petitions on Friday.

District voters approved a referendum calling for the attorney general to be elected rather than appointed by the mayor. But the D.C. Council voted last year to postpone the first election for the office until 2018. Zukerberg sued, and a three- judge panel of the D.C. Court of Appeals ruled in his favor, paving the way for an election this year or as soon as practically possible.
