Leesylvania State Park fishing pier closed due to winter weather damage

The fishing pier at Leesylvania State Park in Woodbridge is closed due to structural damage done by ice and extreme winter weather.

Repairs are needed throughout the structure and management is working hard to get things fixed in a timely manner, Virginia State Parks said in a Friday morning news release.

“Most of the bracing has broken underneath and the roof portion of the pier also has extensive damage to the pillars holding it up,” Leesylvania State Park Manager Kenneth Ashdown said in the release. “It is not safe for the pier to be open to the public at this time and we hope to have this repaired as soon as possible.”

The park will remain open as these repairs will only impact the fishing area.

“The repairs might interfere with the night fishing programs that will be held in March, but we are looking to find another location for this program,” said Ashdown.

Manassas School Board requests council’s sign-off on nearly $11M building purchase

Manassas City Public Schools is asking for City Council’s sign-off on a nearly $11 million purchase of the Centreville Road building that currently houses the school system’s central office. The School Board voted Tuesday night to request council’s authorization to appropriate funds to purchase the property for its alternative education pilot program. The unanimous vote called for authorization from council to appropriate and expend $10.75 million from the school division’s fund balance to purchase the property at 8700 Centreville Road in Manassas. In addition to using the property as a space for the alternative education program, the division plans to continue to house its central office there. “This building will be the site for our alternative [education] pilot program,” School Board Member Sara Brescia said. “It will help us address some concerns people have about our student behaviors and delivering proper student support. So it is a plan to benefit students.”
