A tractor-trailer crash closed all lanes of traffic on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland for more than eight hours, leading to a 14-mile backup during the Wednesday morning commute.

By noon, all lanes have reopened, with delays subsiding, a Maryland Department of Transportation spokesman said.

The crash happened on the eastbound lanes of Route 50 between Route 552/Dominion Road and Piney Creek Road around 2 a.m.

At least one tractor-trailer was involved in the crash. Soon after the collision, one of the vehicles caught fire, a state transportation department official said.

For more than eight hours, all lanes before the crash were closed, pushing back traffic delays to Cape St. Claire before entering the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, with drivers diverted to Exit 39B on Dominion Road and Route 552 to get back on U.S. 50 toward Kent Narrows.

Officials have not said whether anyone was hurt in the crash.
