With the unofficial start of summer in the rearview mirror, many of us will be looking for fun, outdoor activities this weekend — and it just so happens Saturday, June 3, is a license-free fishing day in Maryland.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is offering license-free fishing days for state residents and visitors this Saturday, then again on Saturday, June 10 and Tuesday, July 4.

DNR says it wants to offer people a chance “to explore the state’s diverse fishing without needing a fishing license, trout stamp, or registration.”

The agency’s fish guide includes illustrations of 48 different fish, from the American Eel to the Yellow Perch, as well as three invasive species — the Blue Catfish, Flathead Catfish, and the Northern Snakehead.

On those days, anyone can catch and possess finfish for recreational purposes in any tidal and nontidal waters of Maryland.

Since you have to know where to drop line, the agency has angler access maps to help identify fishing spots and what you’re likely to catch.

Outside of these free fishing days and certain license-free areas, anyone 16 or older fishing in Maryland must have a license, which can be obtained or renewed online, or on the DNR mobile app.
